Big Red Shiny II



This past weekend, was fun: I began a painting, finished a painting and went to a great opening at the Art Ark. My friend and neighbor, Val, had an idea for an entry for me to create for the Big Red Shiny II Show. So I did. It was fast and there was instant gratification (not to mention I won the a prize for the sexiest piece in the show.

  3. It took me at least a minute to figure out what was real and what was painted. A fascinating optical illusion and beautiful painting.

  4. This piece has a lot of emotion and attitude in it, especially in her eyes. It's almost as if your eyes are suddenly locked into hers and you can't look away. The represented textures of her skin make it look very soft and delicate as well as the tonality of her arms giving them a very realistic dimension. I cannot tell where the painting of the dress ends and the actual dress begins. Was there something specific that gave you such a unique idea, or did it just come to you?

  5. This piece is awesome. I really like the way that the dress blends into the painting. That is an excellent idea. The combination of textures are great. Her skin appears so smooth and soft, and yet the folds in the dress add to the dimension of the painting. Before you even realize that the dress is real, the painting jumps out at you. Great work!

    Thanks for asking about where I got the idea for the red dress. My friend Valerie Raps had the vision and she asked me to make the piece for The Big Red Shiny Show II. So, it's really a collaboration between her and me.

  7. I like how creative this piece is. Did you put the fabric on first then paint around it, or did you paint it first then add the fabric? Also, underneath the dress, did you paint her body or is it blank canvas?

  8. This is such an interesting idea for a painting. When you put the fabric on the piece, did you want to create a specific feeling, and if so do you think you could have gotten the same feeling by simply painting the dress on?

  9. This such a impressive piece to me, before this i never knew there was a style in which painting and texture could combine. My question to you is how do you choose the models that you paint that is ofcourse if you do use models?

  10. I really like this painting and the way in which you artistically used the fabric to bring the painting some type of realism. My question is why in the background you choose to use a random direction of brush strokes compared to a uniform up to down or side to side?
